Dr. Alexander Sergeant
Posted on 29/09/2023Sir John Lawes School Year 13 students received a major boost to their preparations for university personal statements, finding out what admissions tutors are really looking for. Dr. Alexander Sergeant, Senior Lecturer in Film & Media Studies and admissions tutor for the School of Film, Media and Communications at the University of Portsmouth came back to Sir John Lawes for a second time, having first shared his invaluable insights to our BTEC Digital Creative Media students as part of the Film and Media Faculty career’s day, held every Spring.
During the session, Year 13 students went on a journey learning where students go wrong with their personal statements, and more importantly, the approach and techniques to articulate with every single word the passion, self-determination and evidence of success which will make their personal statement stand out in a fiercely competitive environment for university places, higher level apprenticeships and employment.
Mr. Thomson, Media Studies teacher and Year 12 Form Tutor who organised the event, said “It’s a fantastic opportunity for our students to be able to not only meet, but ask questions from the highly experienced senior admissions tutor who reviews hundreds of personal statements to gain invaluable insights and ask those really critical questions just at the time where they are perfecting their personal statements.”
Ms. Calverley, Head of Sixth form at Sir John Lawes, added “hearing directly from an admissions officer reinforced everything we have been saying to students; Be genuine, demonstrate you are prepared to work & hard use the ABC model.”
This seminar is just one of many career focused enrichment events for sixth form students which takes place throughout Years 12 and 13, which includes the highly successful Career’s Day every March which features a range of Universities including the team from University of Portsmouth. We are delighted and look forward to Dr. Sergeant coming back to SJL once again in the summer term to share his insights with our Year 12 students at the very start of the applications process, and for the Film and Media Careers’ Day 2024.
