'Futures' Enrichment Day
Posted on 18/11/2024Students across Sir John Lawes School took time off from their normal timetable last Tuesday to allow the freedom to experience a variety of enrichment activities around the theme of 'Futures'. The day was packed with activities to help develop key skills and opportunities to think ahead for their journey beyond school.
Each year group had a different focus:
Year 7 – Future Skills
Our Year 7 students took part in activities and challenges to build essential skills for the future - from teamwork and problem-solving to communication. They then put their new skills to the test by designing a job advert for the Step into the NHS competition.
Year 8 – Dragon’s Den
Our Year 8 students learnt about global warming and the concept of ‘think global, act local.’ They were then tasked with researching a Dragons’ Den style pitch of their best ideas on how SJL can go greener. Sustainability is a key priority of the school and we were keen to hear from our student body as we plan future changes to help reduce our carbon footprint.
Year 9 – Careers in the Curriculum
Our Year 9 students rotated through a carousel of workshops where teachers shared experiences of their careers before becoming a teacher. They took part in activities, tasks and challenges to explore different career paths.
Year 10 – Revision and Study Skills
Our Year 10 students took part in workshops with Learning Performance, where they uncovered the science of learning and explored practical strategies to make revision and independent study more effective.
Year 11 – Exam Revision and Post-16 Futures
Our Year 11 students took part in workshops from Learning Performance, exploring different revision strategies for their GCSEs. In the afternoon they joined our 'Futures Fair,' where Sixth Form students shared insights and advice on post-GCSE options.
Year 12 & Year 13 – Academic Mentoring
