English Week at Samuel Ryder Academy

Posted on 10/03/2025

This week, the whole school has enjoyed English Week, a celebration of reading and literacy.

The week began with a fantastic and engaging presentation from Art Director of YA fiction Sean Williams. Sean spoke to our secondary students about the design process for his worked covers such as ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘The First To Die At The End’ resulting in a competition due to be launched this week asking students to design a new cover for the popular series. Ian Eagleton, author of books such as 'Glitter Boy' and 'The Boy Who Cried Ghost', also spoke to our Year 3 students virtually. On Tuesday, our Year 6 children were invited to join Year 7 and 8 for an exciting author talk. We welcomed award-winning author Tamsin Winter for an engaging and interactive session on her writing career before undertaking a writing workshop with 25 of our Year 8 students. During her talk, Tamsin discussed the inspiration behind her award-winning books, her journey to becoming an author as well as themes affecting young people today. We’d like to thank both Sean and Tamsin for such inspiring sessions.

On Wednesday, the primary students were welcomed by Maria Oliver for some mindfulness and yoga. Maria’s book Once Upon a Time, You... was translated into French and Ukrainian in 2022 and distributed to Ukrainian children coming to the UK to flee the war.

On Thursday, we invited all of our primary children to come to school dressed as their favourite book character for World Book Day. It was wonderful to see the incredibly creative ideas for costumes. Our Sixth Form and staff also embraced the dress up theme with more fantastic efforts. A definite highlight of the day for students across the school was receiving their Wonky Bars - thank you so much to our amazing PTA!

The library hosted our popular family reading sessions this week; we welcomed our primary children and their parents/carers to enjoy a breakfast picnic whilst sharing stories together. Throughout the week, there were some wonderful moments in the library with our secondary and primary students enthusiastically enjoying paired reading.

We hope that our students were inspired, empowered, and entertained during the week and, best of all, keen to get reading and writing.
